The reason for most insurance policies exist is for the simple fact that we don’t know what the future holds, and it is this uncertainty that forces us to hedge against the unknown by purchasing insurance policies, or other similar measures that counteract the risk of the unknown. When bad things happen, they take an emotional toll on you even though you live with much less anxiety when you have insurance measures in place.
There are several types of emotional responses you’re likely to experience after a burglary:
- Stress or anxiety. This is the basic response to trauma. You’re going to become stressed. You’re going to be looking at the hassle of trying to file an insurance claim, and you’re going to be looking at dealing with police reports and more. Anxiety and stress just come with the territory, so be ready for it.
- Depression. Burglary has also been known to trigger episodes of depression. You can begin to feel inadequate as a person. This is especially true for parents who have children that live in the home, or if you’re a caregiver for someone else. You feel like you’ve exposed your family to a dangerous world.
- Paranoia. After you’ve been a victim of a burglary, you start to be suspicious of people. Your faith in humanity is shaken. Everyone you pass in the street becomes a potential burglar, in your mind. You may find it very hard to trust anyone again, at least for a very long time.
- Insomnia. Being the victim of a burglary can cause you to lose sleep. The insomnia is tied in with any or all of the above conditions. You can’t sleep because you’re worried there will be another break-in, or you can’t sleep because you’re stressed out. Over the long term, insomnia will negatively impact your life and your health.
Home security systems don’t prevent all burglaries. Sometimes, they don’t get turned on, and sometimes they just don’t function as designed. That said, a home security system still really is your best defense against most types of home invasions. Keep yourself and your family safe by choosing and installing the right home security system for your needs.
