Everyone knows that conservatories are not the cheapest addition you could add to your home. But they do come with plenty of benefits.

Firstly they are one of the best ways to add real value to your home. Many people also like the versatility they offer. During warm summer evenings or even late winter ones, you can dine outside in the conservatory with friends and family. And of course it provides a bridging space between the indoors and the outdoors, so even if it is raining outside you can enjoy being closer to your garden than you would be otherwise.

But let’s not forget the cost involved in getting a conservatory measured up and fitted. Hiring a firm to do this for you will cost thousands of pounds, no matter what size conservatory you opt for. Is there any way that you can still have that conservatory and pay a lot less for the privilege?

Indeed there is, and if you are a competent DIYer you can do it all yourself. You will probably need one or two extra pairs of hands to help you out, but other than that a simple set of plans should be all you need.

You can buy a new conservatory at low trade prices to save money. You will be getting it from the same sources as the experts do, so you won’t have to worry that the materials are inferior – they’ll be of exactly the same standards.

There are four basic stages to installing your own conservatory, and you’ll need to make sure you understand them all fully before you tackle the whole job. You don’t want to get halfway through and run into problems. If you feel confident to begin you can then get started, remembering to double check the instructions at regular intervals.

The four stages involve constructing a solid base, installing the conservatory frames, getting the roof on and completing the finishing touches. The main saving to be made when doing all this on your own is on labour. If you can get one or two friends to help you and supply them with lunch and a drink for their troubles, you’ll be surprised how much difference it makes to the end price you’ll pay.

One final tip – do make sure you have all the right tools to hand before you start, not to mention all the correct pieces of the conservatory as well. This shouldn’t be a problem when you buy from trade suppliers, but it is always a good idea to check.

And once the conservatory has been built, you can enjoy the fruits of your labours in it as often as you like.
